This work reproduces sash clamps cast in Hydrostone, acrylic and epoxy resin. Ordinarily designed to exert pressure and restrain timber during fabrication, these clamps have been recast in fragile materials that cannot withstand the forces they are intended to impose. Finished in soft colours, they move away from the visual language of industry and become vulnerable, absurd, and non-functional sculptural forms.
Hanging from a timber rack, as they would be stored in a workshop, the sculptures retain a connection to their original purpose while existing only as sculptural objects. By moving a familiar tool from the workshop to the gallery, the work invites viewers to consider the quiet role these objects play in the process of making.
