Claira is a Singapore-born artist residing in Melbourne, Australia. Her practice is driven by curiosity about the capacities of materials and a desire to design systems that embrace failures. She test how much the material can endure, negotiating between control and resistance as it yields, refuses or breaks.
Rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, Claira allows experimentation to shape the work. Through this process, she reveals the labour of making and the tension between maker and material. The behaviours of these materials often lead her to reimagine functional objects, transforming tools of utility into absurd sculptural forms. At times, she uses soft colours to introduce a sense of humour, disrupting the seriousness and authority often associated with certain objects.
